D. Watson, and Dr. John Kendrew pose with their Nobel Prize diplomas in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1962.

Till and McCulloch never made it to the Nobel white-tie award ceremony in Sweden. Colleagues of the pair have said they nominated the duo for the award several times, to no avail.10 Why didn’t their discovery warrant the award? Perhaps it was that their first paper in 1961 was not published in a well-known journal. Perhaps it is because they did not start off using the term “stem cell” in their articles. Perhaps the committee found other discoveries more deserving. No one can know for sure.

Till and McCulloch were scientists who cared greatly about their work and each other. And, as both have said, it wasn’t about the awards for them. It was about the science.
